Cesur Yeni Dünya kitabına ilk başladığımda birçok değişik terim olduğu için zor okunacağını düşünmüştüm fakat beklediğimin tam aksine çok kısa sürede bitirdim ve yazarın hayal gücüne, bakış açısına hayran kaldım. Bilim kurgu kategorisinin en kült eserlerinden biri.

Aldous Huxley’in distopyası F.S 632 yılında geçiyor. ( F.S: Ford Sonrası ) Burada bahsi geçen Ford, T modeli ve seri üretimi bulmasıyla ünlü Henry Ford’tur. Ford adeta ilahlaştırılmış ve tanrı gibi görülmüştür. Aile ve ebeveynlik kavramlarının olmadığı bu ütopyada anne ve baba terimleri müstehcen ve yüz kızartıcı bir şey olarak görülmektedir. Çiftleşme olarak doğum barbarca görülmektedir. Bu nedenle “Londra Merkez Kuluçka ve Şartlandırma Merkezi” de döllenme şeklinde bebekler dünyaya getiriliyor. Daha doğmadan kaderleri belli olan bu bebekler sınıflara ayrılıyor. Epsilon, Gama, Delta, Alfa gibi isimleri olan sınıflara göre karakter ve kişilik özellikleri daha doğmadan belirleniyor. Örneğin bazı bebekler tropik bölgelerde yaşayacak, bazıları klora ve kurşuna dayanıklı kimya işçileri olacak bazıları ise duyusal film üreticileri olacaklardır. Buradaki amaçsa şöyle tanımlanıyor; “Tüm şartlandırılmaların amacı budur: insanlara kaçınılmaz yazgılarını sevdirmek.” Çok katı kast sisteminin geçerli olduğu bu yeni dünya sisteminde sınıflara göre giyim, düşünce, istekler bile farklı olmak zorunda. Örneğin epsilon alt sınıf olsa bile onlara uykularında bir epsilon oldukları için mutlu olmaları öğütleniyor.

Yeni Dünya Sistemindeki en önemli noktalardan biri ise “Hipnopedya” yani uykuda öğrenme. Bebeklere uykularında birçok şey öğretiliyor. Sınıflarının özellikleri, tüketimin önemliliği – bir şey eski veya yıpranmışsa ona yama yapma at ve yenisini al- böylece tüketim özendiriliyor. Ayrıca “Herkes herkes içindir” ve “Herkes mutludur.” Bu gibi şeyler uykuda saatlerce öğretiliyor ve bebeklerin bilincine yerleşiyor.

Tek eşlilik yok ve birden çok kişiyle olunması daha normal görülüyor. Güçlü duyguların olması istenmiyor. Bu nedenle de aşk, evlilik gibi kavramlar yoktur bu dünyada. Kişilerin rahatlaması için “soma” adı veriler gram şeklinde haplar var. Uyuşturucudan farkı ise size kısa süreli veya 1 haftaya kadar uzayacak şekilde tatile çıkmış hissi yaratıyor ve hapın etkisi geçtiğinde hasta olmuyor veya kötü hissetmiyorsunuz. Bu haplar yöneticiler tarafından herkese hediye olarak dağıtılıyor.

Eski dünyadan farklı olarak hasta olmak, yaşlılık, şişmanlama vs gibi insan özellikleri yok. Çünkü sürekli olarak bunların engellenmesi için ilaçlar ve uygulama odaları oluyor.

Yeni Dünya “Cemaat, Özdeşlik ve İstikrar “ kurallarına dayalı. Bireyin düşünmesi istenmiyor. Hatta birey olmak –biri olmak- bile istenmiyor. Çünkü bu bir istikrarsızlık örneği olarak görülüyor.

Fakat bu dünyanın karşısında birde diğer taraf diye geçen Ayrıkbölge de yaşayan yerliler vardır. Burada bahsedilen hiç bir uygarlık örneği yoktur. Her şey eski sisteme göredir. Tek eşlilik, ebeveynlik, çocuk doğurma, hastalık, yaşlılık, tanrı inancı gibi birçok şey burada vardır. Alfa artı sınıfından olan Bernard ve Lenina bir gün bu bölgeye geliyorlar ve burada John ve annesi Linda ile tanışıyorlar. Bernard bu iki “vahşi yi Londra Kuluçka ve Şartlandırma Merkezi’ne deney amacıyla götürüyor ve denetçi Mustafa Mond ‘a sunuyor. Onlarda John’un uygarlığa uyup uyamayacağını test etmeye başlıyorlar. Fakat vahşi bu sınırsız uygarlıkları hiç benimseyemiyor ve gerçek duygulara, acı çekmeye, zorluklar yaşamaya ihtiyacı olduğunu söylüyor ve oradan kaçıp inzivaya çekiliyor. Kitapta geçen bir konuşma ise bu iki dünya arasındaki farkı çok iyi şekilde anlatıyor:

“Ne oldu John, hasta mısınız? – Hayır uygarlık yedim.”

Romanımız Ford’dan sonra 632 yılında başlıyor. Artık insanlar şuan ki yaşamımızdan çok farklı bir yerdeler, toplumdaki herkes mutlu, hiçbir sorun yaşanmıyor, teknoloji son derece gelişmiş durumda. Bunlarla birlikte kimsenin annesi, babası ya da sevgilisi olmasına izin verilmiyor. Aksine bu çok büyük bir ayıp olarak görülüyor. Toplumun yeni bireyleri olan çocuklar ise teknolojinin gelişmişliği sayesinde tüplerde üretiliyor. Hepsi daha tüplerdeyken beşe ayrılıyor: Alfalar, betalar, gamalar, deltalar ve epsilonlar. Toplumun en yüksek rütbelerini Alfalar oluştururken en düşük rütbelere sahip olan ise epsilonlar oluyor. Çocuklar, daha çok küçükken bazı şartlandırmalara maruz kalmakla birlikte kitaplardan ve doğadan nefret etmeleri sağlanıyor. Ardından daha çok tüketimin ön planda olduğu alışkanlıklara yönlendiriliyorlar. Şartlandırılmalarına bağlı olarak da herkes bulunduğu sistemde mutlu bu yüzden kimse bir üst katmana çıkmak gibi bir çaba göstermiyor. Bu sayede toplumda istikrar sağlanmış oluyor. Ama bu toplumda bile bazı zamanlar aykırı düşünen insanlar oluyor. Burada devreye soma denilen bir hap giriyor. İnsanlar bu hapı kullandıktan sonra eski mutluluklarına geri dönüyor.


Bir diğer yandan bu dünyanın tam tersi Vahşi ayrı dünya olarak adlandırdıkları bir yerde var. Bu ülke ile çok nadir bağlantı kuruyorlar. Cahil bir toplum olduklarını her seferinde belirtmekten de geri durmuyorlar. Vahşi dünyadaki insanlar cesur yeni dünyanın aksine her şeyde özgürler ama sefalet ve kötülük içerisinde yaşamaktalar…..


Cesur yeni dünyada yaşayan Bernard Max adlı karakterimiz, toplumun üst tabakalarında yaşayan ama bu sistemi sorgulayanlardan biri. Bunu gizli gizli de yapsa, kendini bu konuda suçlu da hissetse asla bu fikirleri kafasından atamıyor. Tüm bu fikirler aklında dolaşırken vahşi dünyaya tatile gitme fırsatı yakalıyor ve yanına Lenina adlı kızı da alarak yola koyuluyor. Hükümet, bazen diğer taraftan kurtulmak isteyen insanların cesur yeni dünya’ya gelmelerine izin veriyor. Bunun aynısını uygulamak isteyen Bernard Marx, gittiği vahşi ülkede daha önce cesur dünyada yaşayan ve vahşi dünyaya seyahat ettiği sırada orada unutulan Linda ile karşılaşıyor. Kadın kendini almaya gelen kimse olmayınca bu dünyaya uyum sağlamak zorunda kalıyor. Vahşi dünyadaki diğer insanlar gibi bir çocuğu olduğunu söylüyor. Bunu şaşkınlıkla karşılayan Bernard ve Lenina, Lindayı oğlu John ile birlikte yanlarında götürmek istediklerini ifade ediyorlar. Linda teklifi hemen kabul ediyor. John annesinin aksine tereddüt etse de Leninaya aşık olmasıyla birlikte teklifi kabul etmek zorunda kalıyor…


Cesur yeni dünyada Linda çok zorlanmasa da John bu modern dünyanın tahmin ettiğinden çok daha farklı olduğunu kısa zamanda anlıyor. İnsanların hepsi bir kalıba sığdırılmış durumda, kimse kitaplarla ya da sanatla ilgilenmiyor hatta en sevdiği yazar olan William Shakespeare bile yasaklanmış durumda. İnsanlar kendi irade ve özgürlüklerine sahip değiller buna rağmen asla şikayetçi de olmuyorlar.


Tüm bunlardan sıkılmışken Lenina’ya tutunmak isteyen John , ona aşkını ilan ediyor. Fakat John’un aşkı Leninadan çok daha farklı algılaması onu tamamen hayal kırıklığına uğratıyor. Eski yaşamındaki gibi Lenina ile evlenmek istediğini ifade eden John bu sözlerin Lenina için hiçbir anlam ifade etmediğinin farkına varıdığında bu dünyaya dair olan son umutları da bir anda yerini karamsarlığa bırakıyor. Tüm bu yaşananların ardından bir de annesinin ölüm haberini alan John her şeyini kaybediyor. Kendini toplumdan soyutlayarak tamamen içine kapanıyor. Herkesten uzak bir yerde yaşamaya karar veriyor. Fakat Cesur yeni dünyada yaşayan insanlar için bu da çok garip geliyor onu asla yalnız bırakmıyorlar. Bir deney faresiymiş gibi yaptığı her hareketi incelemeye ve onu yargılamaya devam ediyorlar. Hatta bir hayvanat bahçesindelermiş gibi onu beslemeye çalışanlar bile oluyor. Bunlarla birlikte artık dayanamayan John yaşamına son veriyor.


When I first started the Brave New World book, I thought it would be difficult to read because there were many different terms, but contrary to what I expected, I finished it in a very short time and I was amazed by the author's imagination and perspective. One of the most cult works in the science fiction category.

Aldous Huxley's dystopia takes place in 632 A.D. (F.S: After Ford) The Ford mentioned here is Henry Ford, famous for his invention of the T model and mass production. Ford was almost deified and seen as a god. In this utopia, where there is no concept of family and parenthood, the terms mother and father are seen as something obscene and disgraceful. Birth as mating is seen as barbaric. For this reason, babies are born in the form of insemination in the "London Central Incubation and Conditioning Center". These babies, whose fate is determined before they are born, are divided into classes. According to classes with names such as Epsilon, Gamma, Delta, Alpha, character and personality traits are determined before they are born. For example, some babies will live in the tropics, some will be chemical workers resistant to chlorine and lead, and some will be producers of sensory films. The purpose here is defined as: “This is the purpose of all conditioning: to make people love their inevitable destiny.” In this new world system, where a very strict caste system is valid, even clothing, thoughts and demands have to be different according to classes. For example, even if the epsilon is a lower class, they are advised to be happy to be an epsilon in their sleep.

One of the most important points in the New World System is "Hypnopedia", that is, learning in sleep. Babies are taught many things in their sleep. The characteristics of the classes, the importance of consumption - if something is old or worn, don't patch it and buy a new one - thus consumption is encouraged. Also, “Everyone is for everyone” and “Everyone is happy.” Such things are taught for hours in sleep and become embedded in babies' consciousness.

There is no monogamy and it is more normal to be with more than one person. It is not desirable to have strong emotions. Therefore, concepts such as love and marriage do not exist in this world. There are pills in the form of grams called “soma” for people to relax. The difference from drugs is that it makes you feel like you are on vacation for a short time or up to 1 week, and you do not get sick or feel bad when the effect of the pill wears off. These pills are distributed by the rulers as gifts to everyone.

Unlike the old world, there are no human characteristics such as being sick, old age, getting fat, etc. Because there are always drugs and practice rooms to prevent them.

The New World is based on the rules of “Community, Identity and Stability”. The individual is not asked to think. It is not even desired to be an individual – to be someone. Because this is seen as an example of instability.

However, there are locals living in the Split Region, which is called the other side, in front of this world. There are no examples of civilization mentioned here. Everything is according to the old system. Monogamy, parenting, childbearing, sickness, old age, belief in god, etc. Bernard and Lenina, who are from the Alpha plus class, come to this area one day and meet John and his mother, Linda. Bernard takes these two "wilds" to the London Hatching and Conditioning Center for experimentation and presents them to supervisor Mustafa Mond. They, too, begin to test whether John can fit into civilization. But the savage cannot embrace these boundless civilizations at all and says he needs real feelings, suffering, hardships, and flees from there to seclusion. A conversation in the book explains the difference between these two worlds very well:

“What happened John, are you sick? – No, I ate civilization.”

Our novel begins in 632, after Ford. Now people are in a very different place from our current life, everyone in the society is happy, there are no problems, technology is extremely advanced. Along with these, no one is allowed to be a mother, father or lover. On the contrary, it is seen as a great shame. Children, who are the new members of the society, are produced in tubes thanks to the development of technology. While they are all still in the tubes, they are divided into five: alphas, betas, gammas, deltas, and epsilons. Alphas constitute the highest ranks of the society, while the lowest ranks are epsilons. While children are exposed to some conditioning when they are very young, they are made to hate books and nature. Then they are directed to habits where more consumption is at the forefront. Depending on their conditioning, everyone is happy in the system they are in, so no one makes an effort to go to the upper layer. This ensures stability in the society. But even in this society, sometimes there are people who think differently. This is where a pill called soma comes into play. People go back to their former happiness after using this pill.


On the other hand, the opposite of this world exists in a place they call the Wild separate world. They rarely make contact with this country. They do not hesitate to state that they are an ignorant society. Unlike the brave new world, people in the wild world are free in everything but live in misery and evil…..


Our character, Bernard Max, who lives in the brave new world, is one of those living in the upper strata of society but questioning this system. Whether he does this in secret or even if he feels guilty about it, he can never get these ideas out of his head. While all these ideas are running through his mind, he gets the opportunity to go on vacation to the wild world and takes the girl named Lenina with him. The government sometimes lets people who want to get rid of the other side come to the brave new world. Bernard Marx, who wants to do the same, encounters Linda in the wild country he goes to, who previously lived in the brave world and was forgotten there while traveling to the wild world. A woman has to adapt to this world when there is no one coming to pick her up. She says she has a child like other people in the wild. Bernard and Lenina, who are surprised by this, express that they want to take Linda with their son John with them. Linda immediately accepts the offer. Although John hesitates, unlike his mother, he has to accept the offer as he falls in love with Lenina.


Although Linda isn't having much trouble in the brave new world, John soon realizes that this modern world is much different than he imagined. People are all in a mold, no one cares about books or art, even his favorite writer, William Shakespeare, is banned. People do not have their own will and freedom, although they never complain.


Tired of all this, John, who wants to hold on to Lenina, declares his love for her. But John's very different perception of love than Lenina leaves him completely disappointed. Expressing that he wants to marry Lenina as in his old life, John realizes that these words mean nothing to Lenina, and his last hopes for this world suddenly give way to pessimism. After all these events, John, who receives the news of his mother's death, loses everything. By isolating himself from society, he becomes completely introverted. He decides to live far away from everyone. But for the people living in the Brave new world, this is also very strange and they never leave him alone. They continue to scrutinize and judge every move he makes as if he were a lab rat. There are even those who try to feed him as if they were in a zoo. With these, John, who can no longer stand it, ends his life.
